LGBTQIA+ Proposal Engagment Tips

`1Featured on The Knot: LGBTQIA+ Proposal Tips and Insights from Key Moment Films

At Key Moment Films, we’re dedicated to capturing love stories as unique as the couples. As wedding videographers serving East Coast Florida, Newport, RI, and specializing in destination weddings, we understand the beauty of diverse relationships. Recently, we were featured in The Knot’s article “Who Asks in anLGBTQIA+ Proposal? Your Engagement Questions, Answered,” where we shared our thoughts on LGBTQIA+ proposal traditions. In this post, we’ll highlight some of the expert insights from the article and discuss how education plays a crucial role in creating meaningful, personalized proposals.

Who Pops the Question in an LGBTQIA+ Proposal?

The proposal process is a deeply personal one, and for LGBTQIA+ couples, there are no set rules about who should propose. In the article, Ian Ramirez, co-owner of Madera Estates, explained how the concept of a “double proposal” has become a growing trend. Ramirez describes it as a new tradition that moves beyond gender roles, allowing both partners to enjoy the experience of proposing. Whether on the same day or on different days, a double proposal reinforces the idea of love and equality within the relationship.

We’ve enjoyed filming these double proposals, where each partner can ask the other to marry them. It’s an incredible way to honor both people’s commitment, and we love helping couples tell this whole story in their wedding films. Whether you want to propose once or twice, your proposal should reflect your love in the most authentic way possible.

Who Asks Who in a Gay Proposal?

In the article, I shared my thoughts on what we at Key Moment Films call a “rebound proposal,” which is common in queer relationships. This is where one person proposes, and the other follows up shortly after—often within minutes—with their own proposal and ring. It’s a beautiful testament to the equality within the relationship, where both partners express their commitment on equal terms.

One of my favorite memories is of a dear friend who carried a ring on her keychain, just waiting for her partner to propose so she could counter-propose immediately. This personal touch makes these moments unforgettable, and we’re passionate about capturing them in a way that reflects the couple’s unique story.

Does Gender Expression Play a Role in Gay Proposals?

For many LGBTQIA+ couples, the idea of a proposal may feel a bit more fluid and open-ended than in traditional heterosexual relationships. That’s why education is so important. Every couple deserves to feel confident in their decisions and traditions, whether that means one person proposes, both propose, or no one proposes at all.

One of our goals at Key Moment Films is to help couples feel empowered to create their traditions. Whether helping themnavigate a double proposal, offering guidance on when to exchange rings, or ensuring that their wedding reflects their values, we believe education is key to making informed, meaningful choices.

As Ramirez mentions in The Knot article, moving beyond gender roles creates a foundation of love and equality within the relationship. This message resonates deeply with us. Our goal as videographers is to help couples embrace their individuality and feel empowered to express their love in their own way.

Queer Engagment Rings

Another important aspect of LGBTQIA+ proposals is the decision to use—or not use—rings. There are no strict rules when it comes to engagement rings in the queer community. Some couples exchange rings, while others opt for meaningful symbols or mementos that reflect their relationship. In our experience, it’s not about following tradition but choosing what feels right for you.

As we noted in The Knot article, couples don’t need rings to mark their engagement. However, if you do choose to exchange rings, they can be as unique as your relationship. For example, in our own relationship, my wife proposed to me with a traditional diamond ring, and I later proposed with a Tiffany & Co. band that better reflected my style.
